PEOPLE should not be unduly worried about the call by Pas Youth to ban alcohol sales in Muslim majority areas in Pakatan Rakyat States, says Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar.
“It does not necessarily mean that if such a call is made, it will be imposed. It is premature to assume that all Pakatan Rakyat States will agree to this call,” she told Malay Mail last night.
“Pas, particularly its Youth wing, has made many suggestions concerning numerous matters. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that Pakatan Rakyat will automatically adopt its ideas.”
She said as it is Pakatan Rakyat’s stand to promote multiracial politics, it is crucial for all component parties to come to a consensus before solidifying anything.
“To me, alcohol abuse is not just a Muslim problem. There are non-Muslims who are affected by it as well, particularly the younger generation.
“The way I see it, this matter could be viewed as a social issuerather than a religious one,” she said, adding that self-regulation is still the best way to curb alcohol abuse.
